Principles

The two best-know Doubles principles are Stedman and Erin. Both have the same backwork - double-dodge 4-5 up, lie behind, then double-dodge 4-5 down.

In Erin, the frontwork has "thirds between everything"; also note that the leading is all "wrong" (i.e. backstroke then handstroke - watch out for the striking).

In Stedman, there are two front works, know as "Quick" and "Slow". Going in Quick, you just plain hunt, leading right (handstroke, then backstroke), before going straight back out up to 4-5 up. The Slow work again has "thirds between everything" - and all the bits have special names. The first thing is a "Whole Turn" (lead, point seconds, lead) - the first whole lead is wrong, the second is right. The next two leads are single points, known as "Half Turns" - the first is at a handstroke, the second a backstroke. Then the last Whole Turn, leading first right, then wrong.

Orpheus is whole-pull Stedman in 1-2-3, but still with dodging in 4-5; however, five-pull dodges are needed to fill the divisions, which are now 12s rather than 6s.

Some other principles include Carter, Saturn and Vegetarian Sausage.
